Why having a detox may be healthy.

Detoxing is one of the most traditional ways of improving your health.  We've all been there... consumed to excess, whether it be food, alcohol or whatever.  We have felt the strain on our body and decided that enough is enough, time to detox and get the body back in tip top shape.

What a detox does do is allow the body to take a break from being hammered by toxins.  Rest periods for the organs are important – but so to is not giving them too much work at once.

Health benefits of detox

That is not to say that detoxing does not have health benefits, far from it!  In fact a detox is important to the health of a body for many reasons.

Firstly it does give your kidneys and liver a break.  If you are continually bombarding them with toxins then they will have trouble keeping up, and you can do them some lasting damage.  By giving them a break from high toxin levels you allow them a chance to recover.

Also when you are consuming mass numbers of toxins you body ends up losing many nutrients and minerals to help counter them.  These nutrients need replacing, which won't happen whilst you are continually putting more toxins into your body.

By eating healthily and doing a proper detox you are able to 'recharge your body', to put back nutrients and minerals that the body will have expended previously.

It is also important form the point of view of the immune system.  With your body fighting off toxins it is having to concentrate a lot of its efforts, minerals and energies into that.  This can leave you susceptible to catching illnesses and viruses far more easily than you otherwise would

Who here hasn't caught a bug after drinking too much for a few days running?  I know I have.  By giving your body a break it has a chance to let the immune system catch up and recharge, meaning you will be better placed to fight off any illnesses that might be doing the rounds.

The detox might not work like is traditionally thought, expelling toxins from your body, your body is capable of doing that anyway.  What it does is allow your body to recover from the excesses you have put it through, and gives it a chance to recharge and recover.
